The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning to supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) after a group allegedly attacked police officers providing security for campaign activities in Lira District.
According to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the latest incident occurred at around 1pm as the NUP convoy moved from Lira to Alebtong. Supporters reportedly punctured the tyres of a police vehicle, confiscated car keys, and made off with 20 litres of diesel, a laptop, and a bag of clothes.
The attackers accused police of carrying network jammers that interfered with their live-streaming equipment during the campaign trail.
“A case of malicious damage and robbery has been recorded at Lira Central Police Station, and ten suspects have been arrested. They are currently being processed for court, while others are still being pursued,” Kituuma said.
He warned that continued provocation and violence against police officers on duty would no longer be tolerated.
“This continued provocation of police officers on duty is unacceptable. We have started holding individuals accountable for their actions,” he said.
Police noted that similar incidents have been recorded in several districts in recent weeks.
On October 3, NUP supporters allegedly assaulted a police officer in Mayuge; on October 8, a police constable in Kyankwanzi was punched and injured by a supporter who later fled into the crowd; and on October 21, supporters in Kakumiro reportedly damaged a police vehicle, shattering its windscreen.
In Busia, another officer was assaulted under similar circumstances.
Meanwhile, Police on Tuesday night conducted a raid at a hotel in Lira City where some of the wanted individuals were believed to be hiding.
Those arrested include Sembusi Paul, Bukenya Ismail, Lokol Liberty, Nakabuye Mastula, Kamulegeya Robert, Nasozi Hope, Salman Kaggwa, Lubega Allison, Waiswa Rasto, and Katamba Steven.
Police said those found with no case to answer would be released unconditionally, but emphasized that the force will continue to safeguard campaign activities nationwide.
“We remain committed to providing security to all political groups, but we shall not tolerate lawlessness and attacks on officers performing their duties,” Kituuma added.
